Un sello que hablaba sin palabras<\/span><\/h3>\n

Durante d\u00e9cadas, ver el s\u00edmbolo de las Tres Bellotas era un s\u00edmbolo de confianza para los que compraban una herramienta de verdad. No siempre estaba grabado en el acero, de hecho, no he encontrado constancia de que se hiciera de forma sistem\u00e1tica en machetes, azadas o hoces, pero pod\u00eda encontrarse en etiquetas, mangos de madera o incluso en el embalaje. Aun as\u00ed, su presencia dec\u00eda mucho m\u00e1s de lo que parec\u00eda. No era solo una marca comercial: era sin\u00f3nimo de confianza, y de un acero bien hecho.<\/span><\/p>\n

Y para muchos herreros, durante a\u00f1os fue un s\u00edmbolo de\u00a0 garant\u00eda.<\/p>\n

Por que s\u00ed, el acero Tres Bellotas se vend\u00eda.<\/p>\n

Bellota y su acer\u00eda<\/span><\/h3>\n

En 1931, Bellota instal\u00f3 su propia acer\u00eda en Legazpi (Guip\u00fazcoa), basada en un horno de arco el\u00e9ctrico. Este fue un cambio muy importante. En lugar de comprar acero como hac\u00edan otros, lo fabricaban desde cero. Eleg\u00edan la chatarra, la fund\u00edan, la afinaban y la convert\u00edan en muy buenas\u00a0 herramientas.<\/span><\/p>\n

La materia prima pod\u00eda ser chatarra de alta calidad, hierro de primera fusi\u00f3n, obtenido directamente del mineral de hierro en altos hornos, o incluso arrabio, un hierro fundido con alto contenido en carbono. Todo esto se fund\u00eda en el horno el\u00e9ctrico, que permit\u00eda un control muy fino sobre la energ\u00eda y la composici\u00f3n qu\u00edmica.<\/span><\/p>\n

Durante la fusi\u00f3n, se eliminaban impurezas como azufre y f\u00f3sforo, y se realizaban an\u00e1lisis peri\u00f3dicos del ba\u00f1o met\u00e1lico con cucharillas de ensayo.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>En aquella \u00e9poca no se dispon\u00eda de espectrometr\u00eda moderna ni de an\u00e1lisis por combusti\u00f3n como los conocemos hoy. Lo que se hac\u00eda era extraer peque\u00f1as muestras del ba\u00f1o y analizarlas en laboratorio mediante m\u00e9todos cl\u00e1sicos de qu\u00edmica anal\u00edtica: volumetr\u00eda, gravimetr\u00eda o combusti\u00f3n controlada, midiendo los gases liberados para conocer el contenido de carbono. Estos an\u00e1lisis eran m\u00e1s lentos, pero permit\u00edan afinar de forma bastante precisa la composici\u00f3n del acero. Seg\u00fan el resultado, se correg\u00eda la carga: se a\u00f1ad\u00edan materiales carburantes como grafito si hac\u00eda falta subir el carbono, o se oxigenaba el ba\u00f1o si hab\u00eda que reducirlo.<\/span><\/p>\n

Durante la fusi\u00f3n en el horno el\u00e9ctrico, si el ba\u00f1o met\u00e1lico ten\u00eda m\u00e1s carbono del deseado, por ejemplo, si se hab\u00eda usado arrabio o chatarra con mucho contenido en C, se oxigenaba controladamente el ba\u00f1o. Ese ox\u00edgeno reaccionaba con el carbono formando mon\u00f3xido o di\u00f3xido de carbono, que se liberaban como gas.<\/p>\n

Pero para que esa reacci\u00f3n se produjera de forma eficaz, hac\u00eda falta una\u00a0<\/span>escoria b\u00e1sica<\/strong>: rica en \u00f3xidos como CaO o MgO. Esta escoria no solo facilitaba la oxidaci\u00f3n del carbono, sino que adem\u00e1s\u00a0<\/span>retiraba impurezas como azufre y f\u00f3sforo<\/strong>, atrap\u00e1ndolas en la fase l\u00edquida superior.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ese proceso no se quedaba ah\u00ed. Despu\u00e9s ven\u00eda lo que podr\u00edamos llamar una \u201ctriple<\/span><\/p>\n
